No, no! This can’t be happening! In disbelief, Rachel watched Dr. Somerville and two paramedics work furiously on Jimmy. Maggie hovered nearby, hugging herself.
Finally, the attendants prepared to put Jimmy on a gurney.
“Stop!” John screamed, suddenly appearing, Oscar in tow. With a cry, Maggie flew toward him but he pushed her aside. She nearly fell. Rachel reached to catch her.
“Don’t take my son, please! You can’t. He...it’s not safe.”
“Wait a minute, Mister, this boy—”
Andrew whispered to the paramedic. The young woman shook her head, then shrugged. “You’re the doc.” Handed him a paper to sign. Glanced at John. “Hope you know what you’re doin’, sir. Your boy belongs in a hospital.”
After they left, John perched on the bed. The others found chairs.
No one spoke, all listening to Jimmy’s shallow breathing.
This’s all your fault! Rachel wanted to cry. How could you do this to him?
“What happened, Maggie?” asked John.
“Nothing! He was calm, the meds were almost finished. Why Rachel...and he—” She looked at her daughter.
John rose swiftly. “What did you—”
“No one did anything,” Andrew snapped. “He had a severe reaction.”
“To what?” Maggie asked.
“Dammit it, woman,” Andrew bellowed. “I bloody well don’t know!”
“Hey!” Rachel snapped. “Don’t shout at her.”
Andrew flipped up his palms. “Forgive me. I’m just frustrated. Jimmy’s condition makes no sense.”
