“What’s in the safe?”
Andrew Somerville hesitated. Rachel examined his craggy face and thought it appealing. “My work’s private. I’m rather busy...” He waited expectantly, arm extended towards the door.
“Oh, don’t let me disturb you,” she replied, peering into a microscope. “How’d you know I was here? Security bell?” Her fingers shook lightly as she adjusted the focus.
“Do you mind, Miss?”
“Ms. Willingdon.” She thrust out her hand. “Sorry, awful habit. Just curious. My mother’s told me a lot about you.”
He wiped his hands. Reluctantly shook hers. “Ah, yes! Maggie’s daughter.”
“Right,” Rachel grinned. “Thought I’d drop by and introduce myself. Hoping you’d clue me in on your work.” She glanced around. “Must be something pretty special. Place’s locked up tighter’n Fort Knox.”
“Clue you...” A frown creased his forehead. “I don’t think so, Ms. Willingdon. As I said, my work’s private.”
“I don’t get how a scientist can work for a man who’s been touched by God.”
Andrew bristled. “My personal beliefs’re none of your business. I don’t care whose daughter you are. You’re rude.” He gestured again to the door. “Maggie’s such a gentle soul. Where in the world did you spring from?”
