Tired of the saccharine infomercial, Rachel struck back. “What’s so special about his message?”

“Our Apostle’s not one for creeds or doctrines,” Susan replied. “He’s been touched by God. Part of His plan, I’m certain.” She paused. “Now, Rachel, my troubled one. We’ve answered enough of your questions. It’s time to answer ours.”

Troubled one?

“What do you believe, child?”

Rachel hesitated. “Funny. John asked me the same thing.” She looked at her mother. I don’t know you at all.

Maggie smiled. Gently stroked her daughter’s cheek.

Finally, Rachel whispered, “Don’t think I believe in anything anymore.”
