Maggie played with her fingers.
Stung by the familiar habit, Rachel laughed bitterly. “Then what?”
The narrow fingers flew. “I tried to leave,” Maggie replied. “To be with you...” She gulped. “Didn’t get far. I was half-starved and penniless. Father found me. Beat me, put me in isolation until...”
Despite her rage, Rachel felt pity. “It’s okay,” she heard herself saying. “It’s okay. He told you I was dead so you’d give up, didn’t he?”
Her mother’s hair bobbed.
“And you did.” Now her fury unraveled, words bursting out. “You did give me up. Didn’t you? My own mother! My own mother. You let that misogynistic, brainwashing piece of shit ruin my life.”
